A Multithreaded Java Framework for Information Extraction in the Context of Enterprise Application Integration

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a new multithreaded framework for information extraction with Java in heterogeneous enterprise application environments, which frees the developer from having to deal with the error-prone task of low-level thread programming. The power of this framework is demonstrated by an example of extracting product prices from web sites, but the framework is useful for numerous other purposes, too. Strong points of the framework are its performance, continuous feedback, and adherence to maximum response times. The description of the framework uses UML modeling techniques for visualizing multithreading. Moreover, we tackle Java problems of stopping running threads.

Validation of a Generic Service Governance Meta Model based on the Comparison of Major Governance Frameworks

    Get PDF
The effective governance of organizational capabilities in the areas of Service Management and Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) has been broadly recognized as an essential success factor for service-oriented enterprises. Organizations that target the adoption of an adequate Service Governance approach face the difficulty of selecting from a variety of related frameworks with differing scopes and objectives. In this paper, we provide a structural comparison of the major, non vendor-specific IT and SOA Governance and Management frameworks and use this comparison to validate our own Service Governance meta model. This generic meta model is intended to provide a sound conceptualization, thereby contributing to a better understanding and facilitation of Service Governance, e.g. by forming the foundation for the development of a flexible and configurable Service Governance tool

Online service delivery models : an international comparison in the public sector

    Get PDF
Governments around the world are facing the challenge of responding to increased expectations by their customers with regard to public service delivery. Citizens, for example, expect governments to provide better and more efficient electronic services on the Web in an integrated way. Online portals have become the approach of choice in online service delivery to meet these requirements and become more customer-focussed. This study describes and analyses existing variants of online service delivery models based upon an empirical study and provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in government. For this study, we have conducted interviews with senior management representatives from five international governments. Based on our findings, we distinguish three different classes of service delivery models. We describe and characterise each of these models in detail and provide an in-depth discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches

Barriers to Adoption of Financial Technology: A Study of the Australian Financial Sector

    Get PDF
The Australian Financial sector is the largest contributor to Australian GDP and represents the 4th largest pool of investible wealth in the world and the largest in Asia. Traditional businesses in the sector are under pressure from direct competitors and under potential threat from powerful global technology-based platforms. However, the rate of adoption of innovative Financial Technology by the Financial sector has been saliently low and has potentially serious adverse impacts on the sector, individual Australians and Australia’s country competitive advantage. Despite the sector’s importance, there is a paucity of Australian-specific research into Board decision making in the Financial sector regarding adoption of innovative technology. The purpose of this Research-in-Progress paper is to explore and establish, using a mixed methods research methodology, what are the barriers to adoption of Financial Technology by public entities in the Australian Financial sector

Co-Creation in Business Service Lifecycle Management

    Get PDF
Co-creation between customers and providers has recently gained more attention by business service providers as a promising endeavour. The different perspectives of co-creation - innovation, sourcing and marketing - are well deployed. From a provider’s point of view, the question of how to manage business services with respect to co-creation is vitally important. However, service engineering and service lifecycle management typically take a mostly internal, closed-loop approach, although a logical implication of acknowledging the value co-creation perspective on “service” would be to leverage customer and other stakeholder competences to the full extent. This paper aims at reconciling the perspectives of co-creation and makes a contribution by analysing where and how co-creation can be effectively utilised throughout the various stages of a generic business service lifecycle. The result will be a framework guiding companies in using co-creation when managing their business services

IDEA ASSESSMENT IN OPEN INNOVATION: A STATE OF PRACTICE

    Get PDF
Open innovation has become a fruitful approach to increasing the potential of innovation in organisations. Similarly to traditional innovation, an open innovation approach can be characterised in three phases; namely idea generation, idea assessment, and idea implementation/diffusion. While the academic community has begun to provide initial guidance for improving the various stages of the open innovation process, still little is known about how organisations currently assess ideas once they are collected. The potentially vast quantity of ideas collected through an open innovation approach has limited benefits to an organisation that is not able to categorise and assess ideas. Accordingly, in this study we carry out an exploratory survey among 331 managers to obtain a better understanding of idea assessment in practice. Our findings show, among others, that organisations investing in Information Systems for idea management have a higher satisfaction with the effectiveness of idea assessment, which is, in turn, associated with higher satisfaction with the innovation process overall

The two cultures and the internet revolution

The service-orientation paradigm has not only become prevalent in the software systems domain in recent years, but is also increasingly applied on the business level to restructure organisational capabilities. In this paper, we present the results of an extensive literature review of 30 approaches related to service identification and analysis for both domains. Based on the consolidation of a superset of comparison criteria for service-oriented methodologies found in related literature, we compare and evaluate the different characteristics of service engineering methods with a focus on service analysis. Although a close business and IT alignment is regarded as one of the core beneficial promises of service-orientation, our analysis suggests that there is a lack of unified, comprehensive methodology for service identification and analysis integrating and addressing both domains. Thus, we discuss how our results can inform directions for future research in this area

Exploring Dynamic Capabilities, Digital Business Transformation and Indonesia’s Creative Industry Sector

    Get PDF
Organisations that are less digitally capable are more vulnerable to the impacts of change. It is argued that organisations must enhance Dynamic Capabilities (DCs) and embrace Digital Business Transformation (DBT). However, whilst technology disruption and global competition impact both developed, and developing countries, most theories and implementations of DBT are derived from experiences in developed countries. Implementation of DBT in less developed countries requires an understanding of the current status of DBT, influencing factors and what adaptations are needed, in those contexts. The paper presents the conceptual foundations for ongoing research into how concepts of DCs and DBT are applicable to Indonesia’s Creative Industry Sector (CIS). The work has particular importance for Indonesia’s economy. Specifically, the paper provides a conceptual foundation for further research synthesized from extant DCs and DBT models. This current research suggests the importance of investigating how to bring theories of DCs and DBT into developing countries

The Role of Business Analytics for Competitive Advantage of Small and Medium Enterprises

    Get PDF
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are locomotives of economic development. They constitute an important proportion of enterprises globally, including in Australia. Hence, the Australian government recognises the importance of enabling the competitiveness of SMEs as a driving force of the economy of Australia. In recent years, there has been a rapid expansion of technological resources which are essential in enabling competitive advantage for SMEs. One type of technical resource that has gained increasing importance over the last decade is Business Analytics (BA). Research into BA, predominantly in the context of large organisations, has shown how BA contributes to business value and business performance. However, there’s a lack of understanding of the role BA resources can play in obtaining competitive advantage in the SME context. By employing Resource-Based View (RBV) as theoretical underpinning, this research explores this gap and aims to provide a richer understanding of the role of BA capabilities and BA assets in enabling SMEs to create competitive advantage as well as an insight into how SMEs utilise BA resources to that end

Achieving Strategic Business Objectives from Business Analytics in Small and Medium Enterprises

    Get PDF
Enterprises use Business Analytics (BA) to achieve business value. Although SMEs significantly contribute to economic development and constitute a large proportion of enterprises, research into BA has been mostly conducted in large enterprises. Research on how SMEs can achieve their strategic business objectives with BA is scarce. In recent years, the interest in technological resources has rapidly expanded, as they are essential in achieving strategic business objectives for SMEs. BA is one type of technological resource that has gained increasing importance. However, there is a lack of understanding of the role BA can play in obtaining competitive advantages in the SME context. This research explores SMEs’ BA resources in 12 SME case studies. It provides a richer understanding of the role of BA resources in enabling SMEs to achieve their strategic business objectives and insight into how SMEs of different sizes can utilise BA resources to that end
